The Grand National 2014

Every year in April the world turns it eyes towards Aintree Racecourse for the greatest horse race on earth… the Grand National. Officially running since 1839, the steeplechase is famous for its giant fences and big odds winners.

It is not just the UK and Ireland that eagerly await the event; it is watched across 140 countries by over 600 million people worldwide. What makes the Grand National stand out from other major horse races is the sheer length of the course and difficulty of the fences. The Grand National 2014 will take place on Saturday 5th April and you can expect it to be nothing short of thrilling.

The story of Auroras Encore from the 2013 Grand National will – like Red Rum and Devon Loch – be remembered for years to come. The underdog comfortably cruised through to the finish line first, defying his odds of 66/1. It's the tales of the underdog which really lodge themselves in the memories of racing fans, from Mon Mome who won at 100/1 in 2009 to Foinavon who won famously won in 1967 after a pile-up at the fence which now carries his name.

Make sure you don't miss out on any of the action this year with our guide to the world's most exciting horserace. If you want to place a bet on the race we recommend using Paddy Power or Ladbrokes, both offer a secure, user friendly service with great odds on all the runners.

FInding A Winner

  • Age Before Beauty

Looking back at the past 20 years of Grand National winners, 17 of them were between the ages of nine and 11.
  • Weight Watchers

A generally accepted rule is that horses under the 11-01 weight mark are much more likely to win.
  • Jumping For Joy

Poor jumpers are unlikely to improve over the demanding Aintree fences, look for horses with clean jumping form.
